A Study on Sleep Quality and Geriatric Depression in the Elderly between Hospital and Senior Welfare Service Center

Abstract
This study was aimed to compare sleep quality and geriatric depression in hospitalized elderly with those of the elderly using a senior welfare service center and to know the factors for better sleep quality and for improvement depressive conditions. Through this research, the mean score of sleep quality was significantly lower and the mean score of geriatric depression was significantly higher in the hospitalized elderly than those who were in the senior welfare service center. On the basis of this study, we discussed as follows; Firstly, sleep quality for the elderly in hospital was different from that of the elderly using a senior welfare service center. Secondly, the most influential factors for sleep quality were male, spouse, occupation, and snoring while only occupation in the elderly using senior welfare service center. Third, the most influential factors for geriatric depression were family support and economic status in both groups and, spouse and education level were important to depression in hospitalized elderly only. From the above results, the strategies to intervene snoring for sleep quality has to be studied in the hospital. Also, nursing education for family support methods should be considered as an available nursing intervention for geriatric depression in both facilities.
